The Magic of Dove Cottage

A Mural That Changed Everything

Hi friends, It's been a while since I've shared some art, so I wanted to tell you about an incredibly uplifting project I recently completed at Dove Palliative Care Ward in Caloundra Hospital. As one of the first hospitals built on the Sunshine Coast, contributing to its heritage has been a true honor.

A few months ago, Dove Cottage contacted me to create an uplifting piece of art to bring comfort to families during their most challenging times. Working closely together, we designed a magical, enchanted Australian forest scene featuring wallabies, cassowaries, cockatoos, and many other beautiful native animals.

Before I started, I had no idea what a palliative care ward truly was. The head nurse explained, "This place is not like any normal job; it's where people come to peacefully leave this world." Those words stayed with me throughout the entire month I spent painting.

During that time, I witnessed the full spectrum of human emotion. I saw beautiful, profound moments that were almost too much to process. I remember crying in my car many times after witnessing a family's heartbreak, and feeling my heart swell when a terminally ill patient came to the window to smile, wave, and congratulate me while I worked. Knowing that this artwork inspired and will continue to inspire someone in their final moments is more meaning than words can describe.

This has been, by far, the most heartfelt piece I've ever created, and I'm deeply grateful for the experience. The experience reminded me that art has the power to do more than beautify a space, it can offer solace, create moments of peace, and remind us of the beauty that still exists even in our darkest hours. I'm deeply grateful to the nurses at Dove for trusting me with this project and for the profound lessons they taught me simply by doing their work with such compassion and grace.

Looking back, this project taught me how precious life truly is. Every moment, the joyful ones, the painful ones, the quiet ones, they're all worth honoring. They're all worth fighting for. And if this mural can bring even a small measure of comfort to families walking through the hardest days of their lives, then it will forever remain the most meaningful work I've ever done.
