Cliffs at Point Cartwright

The Balance Between Foundations and Freedom

Painting at the stunning cliffs of Point Cartwright, was an exhilarating experience that allowed me get a sunburn, but more importantly to explore some impressionistic brushstrokes. The vibrant scenery, with its big fluffy clouds and sweeping ocean waves, inspired me to simplify forms and let go of the details that often constrain realism.

As I become a more seasoned plein air painter, this venture into breaking away from classical roots and into the unknown keeps my creative spirit alive. Each brushstroke feels like shedding my previous rigidity and transforming the scene into more abstract or impressionistic statement, a catalyst for artistic growth.

A thought shared by someone close to me resonates deeply: "A good painter learns the foundations of classical painting, while a great painter learns them and then forgets them." This idea encourages me to evolve and experiment, continually asking how I can push my art into new and exciting territory.

Painting at Point Cartwright again became about more than capturing beauty; it was a testament of artistic exploration. I'm excited to see where this journey takes me next, blending the foundations of my craft with the freedom of impressionism and abstraction. Here’s to the unknown and the fresh perspectives it brings!
