Josh Wright is a professional artist with over ten years of experience and is a classically trained graduate from the prestigious Florence Academy of Art in Italy, where he dedicated five years to studying classical realism painting. Wright has worked with churches, charities, and clients all around the world from Mexico, the USA, to Australia, and Italy. Wright will be teaching an oil painting course at the Caloundra Art Centre Association in Sunshine Coast, QLD, that shares the same classical methodologies used by the Old Master painters like Titian, Caravaggio, Van Dyke, Sargent, and so many others.
Course includes:
All Materials (Oil paints, brushes, and stretched and toned canvas, $250 value)
Artists will learn:
Portrait construction and the initial block-in
Grisaille underpainting techniques
Proportion, likeness, and facial anatomy
Understanding light, shadow, and value
Colour theory and flesh-tone mixing
Oil painting and rendering techniques
Developing form, atmosphere, and three-dimensionality
Taking a portrait from the initial drawing through to completion
Course Description:
Step by step, artists will be guided through the complete process of creating a classical oil portrait. Wright will use a chairoscuro portrait photograph to teach artists how to paint a life-sized portrait on an 18 × 24 inch (45 × 60 cm) canvas.
Beginning with the initial charcoal block-in on a toned canvas, artists will learn how to establish accurate proportions and anatomy with paint, develop the portrait using the grisaille technique, understand values and colour theory, mix and layer flesh tones, apply traditional rendering techniques, and refine the painting through to completion.
Previous Classes
Wright's Portrait Workshop is limited to a maximum of four artists at a time. Class sizes are intentionally kept small to ensure each participant receives individual guidance, personalised feedback, and plenty of one-on-one support throughout the workshop. This intimate learning environment allows answers to questions at every stage of the process and help develop skills with confidence.
