In classical academia’s, cast drawing is a fundamental practice where students replicate plaster casts of sculptures using charcoal on paper. This method focuses on building drawing skills in a logical way. By precisely replicating the cast, it strengthens an artist's ability to perceive distances, lengths, angles, and light. This technique emphasizes accuracy, using beautiful references to systematically develop foundational drawing skills. Through this approach, artists cultivate a keen eye for detail and composition.
Course includes:
All Materials (Arches Paper, Charcoal, and eraser, $100 value)
Beginning construction
Techniques to start and finish a drawing
Techniques to use charcoal
Values and color theory

Lighting and composition building
Course Description:
In this course, students will learn to set up a cast to explore composition and lighting, focusing on positioning for balance and perspective. Light and shadow will be used to enhance form and depth. We'll explore the sight-size and comparative measurement techniques to refine drawing skills. The sight-size method involves positioning your drawing alongside the reference cast at the same scale, allowing for direct comparison of proportions and angles to ensure accuracy. Meanwhile, comparative measurement focuses on evaluating relative distances and angles within the subject, deepening your understanding of proportion and spatial relationships. Together, these techniques will enhance precision and observational skills, laying a strong foundation for realistic drawing. We will be drawing from life the Michelangelo’s Plaster Cast Copy.
