St. George’s at Midday:
from Commission to Canvas
Recently, I had the privilege of a commission-based project that took me to the historical hidden gem St. George Presbyterian Church in Sydney. This journey was more than just painting a beautiful scene; it was about connecting with a client's memories and bringing them to life through art.
The commission came from an American client who asked to capture the essence and beauty of St. George’s Presbyterian Church, a place filled with personal memories and significance for them. Being entrusted with this vision was both an honor and a responsibility.
Painting at St. George’s felt like both a milestone and a rite of passage as paintings of churches are somewhat a tradition of classical Baroque and Impressionist painters. Artists like Monet, Pissarro, and so many others whom I deeply admire, often gravitated towards religious architecture, finding inspiration in their grandeur and spiritual significance. This historical connection enriched my work, as I feel a sense of continuity with those who came before me.
I felt humbled and grateful for this experience as it deepened my sense of purpose as an artist, reminding me of the power of art to capture and preserve the beauty of cherished places.
