Color to Children's Health Service
One of the most rewarding parts of my artistic journey has been the opportunity to give back to the community through my work. My latest project involved creating a series of colorful jungle animal vinyl art decals for the Children's Health Service at Caloundra Hospital. Over the past few months, I've been developing these artworks on a small scale at high resolution and enlarging them for large-format vinyl printing. Seeing these playful animals finally come to life on the hospital walls has been incredibly rewarding, but this particular project means much more to me than another professional accomplishment.
As a child, I spent a significant amount of time at the Children's Hospital Anaheim, in Los Angeles, after suffering from a cerebellar arteriovenous malformation rupture (AVM). This traumatic injury required brain surgery and extensive rehabilitation, as I was temporarily paralyzed on the left side of my body and had to work hard towards regaining my strength and mobility. Some of my earliest memories from that time are of the bright, beautiful colors surrounding me in the children's hospital. Even during moments of fear, uncertainty, and despair, those colors offered a sense of comfort and an escape from what I was experiencing.
Looking back, I realize just how powerful our surroundings can be, especially for a child going through something frightening. Art has an incredible ability to bring light into dark places, inspire imagination, and offer a moment of happiness when it's needed most. Now, years later, having built a career as a professional artist, it's a tremendous honor to find myself on the other side of that experience, creating artwork for children who may be facing challenges of their own.
There's something deeply meaningful about knowing that a child might look up at one of my colorful animals and experience that same little moment of joy I remember from my own childhood. As my career continues to grow across the Sunshine Coast, I'm reminded that some of the most meaningful accomplishments aren't necessarily about how far we've come professionally, but about what we're able to give back along the way.
To go from being a child surrounded by hospital artwork to becoming the artist creating it is something I'll always be grateful for.
